How important is a good workflow?

The only answer is that there is nothing more important in your bookkeeping / accounting practice than a solid workflow. I have been quite busy and under the weather the past few months and if I didn't have a solid workflow, (and an awesome team), I can tell you, things would have swallowed me whole.

That's why we were just recognized as one of the Hubdoc top 50 Cloud Accounting Firms in North America for our Workflow and technology stack. Now, this doesn't mean that we have all of the apps available within our workflow. On the contrary, we consider ourselves to be app minimalists. It's not what you use, it's how you use it. The most important thing is to have a plan and maximize the efficiency of the apps that are within out tech stack. And while other firms are using different apps, or maybe even the same apps in different ways, it is important to pick the workflow that works best for you. But to work without a workflow is like jumping into the deep end of the swimming pool, not knowing how to swim, and without water wings.

We started with identifying our pain points and finding apps that were multi-purpose. For example, we use 17Hats for quoting, contracts, email automation, and a full CRM. We found that we do not like the to do list build within, so use QBOA Work, for our tasks. I know of other firms that use 3 or 4 apps to do what we have 2 do for us. Does this mean that these firms are doing it wrong? Not necessarily. As long as they have a solid workflow, that works for them, then they are just doing it different. There are so many choices out there, but you need to find what works for you.

As we are getting ready to enter tax season, we have all of our regular work and then add on 600 returns to do within our short 2 month tax season. A tight workflow is even more important so that we don't fail clients or fall behind on our work. If you take the time to find your pain points, and find an app that will solve them in a way that makes sense to you, then you are already setting yourself up for success.
